Google ends Google Desktop

Date: 14 Oct 2011 Comments:0

I can’t say I’m disappointed, it was one of the biggest resource hogs I have ever seen and one of the first things I uninstall when a computer is having performance problems. While Google has a lot of really good (and free) tools and apps, this was never one of them. Here is a link to the article:

Privacy Concerns – Tom Tom

Date: 7 May 2011 Comments:0

I just read an article about the sale of driver location and speed information to several European Countries police departments. While this information doesn’t tell the police who the speeders are, it is a way for them to set up speed traps in common stretches of road where speeding was common. This is another location service that does not allow you to opt out. While Tom Tom is selling your info to the police they are also offering the option to warn you about known speed traps right on your GPS device. They are playing both sides in a like a double agent ion a James Bond movie. You may be thinking “So what? I live in the U.S. ” But Tom Tom says they have plans to start selling the information to Police departments in the U.S. by the end of the year.

Privacy Concerns – Aarons Electronics:

Date: 6 May 2011 Comments:0

Rent to own that laptop? Guess what, don’t pay the bill and big brother may be watching. As far as that is concerned they may be anyway. The couple in the news right now had paid the bill but an accounting error flagged them as in repossession. When the manager appeared at their doorstep to repossess the computer he was armed with photos of them inside their house using the equipment. My first question is: How would having a photo of the renter help you repossess the laptop? I can see disabling the OS until the bill has been paid. This is a tactic used by the tote the note car lots and seems to work. I can also see tracking the IP of the user. If they claimed to not have the machine the IP could be tracked back to their user account at the IP. But a photo from inside the home is very invasive. Aarons no has a PR nightmare on their hands and it will be interesting to see how this pans out.

Privacy Concerns: iPhone

Date: 5 May 2011 Comments:0

Recently it came to light that the iPhone tracks your every move without you knowing. It’s not clear what was being done with this data but I can imagine that in a crime the police wouldn’t hesitate to pull this data. This is not to say they couldn’t do the same thing with your regular cell phone. Triangulation is used to track any cell phone location. The iPhone tracking just makes this easier and more accurate. I have nothing to hide about my location, it’s not like my location is ever private anyways. Lisa checks us in on FaceBook everywhere we go. I can even appreciate the ability to see where my 12 year old has been (and he thought the iPhone was a gift to him). But I would also like the ability to opt out. While I may not have a need right now, I can see how some might not want to be tracked constantly. The other problem is that Apple didn’t bother to tell anyone. They prompt when an app wants to know your location as if you have a choice as to whether you are being tracked. But in reality this is just a way of making you feel like you are in control.

Free Stuff Friday-Mail Washer

Date: 29 Apr 2011 Comments:0

After missing a couple of prestigehelp.com emails I decided it was time to add that email to my iPhone. The reason I hadn’t already done this was simple. The iPhone offers no spam filtering. So I knew that this was going to be a problem. I could already hear my phone blinging away all night as the spam rolls in. My first thought, because I am a do myself kind of person, was to go block IP addresses, accounts, filter by keyword and stuff like that. I quickly found that this was a bigger job than I thought. In my research I found something that did exactly what I was trying to do. No need to reinvent the wheel this time. Mail washer does what I wanted to do. It gives me a quick list of all the mail. Marks the suspected spam red and allows me to change that with a simple thumbs up or thumbs down. It learns what my spam is and automatically marks spam in the future. I can’t say how happy I am with this software. Give it a try.

New Rogue Antivirus Malwares Hid Users Files

Date: 18 Apr 2011 Comments:0

The new Rogues that I am seeing lately hide the user’s files. Normally viruses don’t destroy files, they just want to get your credit card info and run. The latest scare tactic used by the virus writers hides your file using the file properties function in windows. This can scare some users and I have had a few panicked calls about this. NO worries, in most cases your files are there on your computer they are just hidden. If this happens to you and you don’t know how to change those attributes on your files give me a call I can fix these remotely.
